Can local teams survive Nedbank KO?

Sport  Date: 01 April 2016

It remains to be seen whether Magezi FC will rise to the occasion and beat Bidvest Wits to secure a place in the quarterfinal stage of the Nedbank Cup KO competition when they meet in their last-16 round match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium this evening (Friday).

If the words of the coach of Magezi, Mr Joel Mongalo, are anything to go by, Magezi will proceed to the next round. According to Mongalo, his boys will give Wits a lifetime shock if they take Magezi for granted. He reiterated the fact that, although they were campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League, they were ready to demonstrate that they had not reached the last-16 stage of the competition by default.

Magezi are the only surviving amateur side in the competition. The game is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 and will be televised live.

Four matches will played tomorrow. The 2008 finalists, Mpumalanga Black Aces, will take on Maritzburg United in Mbombela. Maritzburg beat Black Leopards 3-1 in the last-32 stage of the competition.

Polokwane City will lock horns with Platinum Stars at the Moruleng Stadium and Free State Stars will play against Santos at the Athlone Stadium. The defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, will host the NFD side, Mbombela United, in Pretoria.

The NFD logleaders, Baroka FC, will play against Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Baroka’s way to the last-16 stage went via the Absa Premiership League side, Chippa United, whom they beat 3-2. Baroka will rely on their strikers, Thabiso Kutumela, Loyiso Simandla and Jacky Motshegwa for goals.

The last match will be played next Tuesday, 5 April, when Supersport United will host University of Pretoria at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.
