The SAB League match between Benjies Football Club and Kgapane Young Stars, that was played at the Giyani Section F grounds on Saturday ended in chaos. The winner in the match would have been declared the champions for the Limpopo East Regional Association.
It was evident from the first whistle that both sides were fully prepared for the game from the manner in which their midfielders dished out telling passes to their strikers. Benjies made their intensions clear when they missed a fortune in the 10th minute.
Ntakadzeni Mudau caused an upset when his header hit the cross bar and landed off the pitch for a goal kick. It was not long before his captain, Tshfhiwa Nedzamba, finished off a loose ball after a scramble within the Stars’ danger zone.
The struggle continued with both sides displaying entertaining football. The team from Tzaneen created three beautiful chances shortly before half time, but they failed to convert any of them into a proper goal. They found the net, however, through Rowen Mkhari in the 65th minute.
Benjies fought the last 20 minutes of the game with their hands tied behind their backs. Their defender, Legson Badzhi, was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. The score was still 1-1 at full time and extra time was added to determine the winner.
Nothing had changed after the extra time and the last resort was a penalty shootout. Benjies scored two and missed one while Stars converted both their chances. The keeper of Benjies refused to go to the goal box when Stars were about to take their third penalty. He told the referee that it was already dark and that he could not see the ball clearly. After a short debate with the referee and his assistants, the referee decided to terminate the game. Both Benjies and Kgapane Young Stars were summoned before the league’s disciplinary hearing the following day.
