A zealous young athlete, who represented the Limpopo province in the National Championships in Bloemfontein last week, was rewarded for her sportsmanship and dedication by a well-known local businessman and traditional leader.

Headman Lindelani Rammbuda of Dzimauli-Thondoni, who owns several businesses in Thohoyandou, said he was touched by the dedication and hard work of the local athlete, Rabelani Denga (18). Denga is a member of the Vision Athletic Club based at Makwerela and she is doing Grade 10 at Phaswana High School.

“I heard that she was representing our province in the 1 500m race in Bloemfontein last week and felt that I needed to do something to encourage her.” Headman Rammbuda presented the young athlete with R500 cash, a pair of track suits and running shoes at Thohoyandou on Saturday.

“I hope the donation will challenge other traditional leaders and businesspeople to give back to their communities because we are what we are because of these people. I am encouraging the young girl because I know she is a community builder, unlike other kids who are engaging themselves in criminal activities and prostitution.”

Obviously on cloud nine, Rabelani said she was surprised to know that there are prominent people who are watching her performance out there. “Although I came sixth in the competitions in Bloemfontein, I felt I had represented the province with patriotism and pride. I do not even have a sponsor but what Headman Rammuda did clearly indicates that he has a soft heart for the poor. I only had one track suit and my running shoes are tattered. Thank you a million times, Headman Rammbuda, and I hope other community members will follow suit, for the benefit of sports in our society. …”

Rabelani’s trainer, Fhatuwani Mudau, says his protégé has the potential to make it big in the South African athletic fraternity. “She is still young, courageous and hardworking. This donation would obviously motivate her to put in more effort because she has what is needed to be a world champion.”

Mudau humbly requests community members to assist Vision Athletics Club with sports equipment or cash because they do not have a sponsor. The club can be contacted at 072 817 9878.
