Future of Dynamos still in the balance

Sport  Date: 09 June 2006

The future for Dynamos Football Club as one of the Limpopo-based Castle Premiership teams is still hanging in the balance. The team’s managing director, Mr Pat Malabela, was still to make up his mind whether or not to sell the franchise or succumb to the supporters’ demand.

According to media reports, the owners for the Mvela Golden League affiliates, Zulu Royals, have offered Malabela a tempting amount. The reports indicate that the Kwazulu Natal side are still waiting for a reply from Malabela after they came up with a R27million offer.

In an interview, Malabela said that it was premature to say whether or not the club will still be the pride of Giyani, come next season. He confirmed, however, that negotiations were continuing with a number of prospective buyers. He said that it was not his intention to sell the franchise, but running the team without a sponsorship will not be possible for him anymore. “I highly respect the interests of the club’s supporters, but I cannot continue to run it from my pocket,” he said.

Malabela could not confirm nor deny the report that Zulu Royals are dangling a R27 million carrot over his head. The Managing Director of Royals, Mr Patrick Sokhela, could not be reached for comment. He was said to be out of the country at the time of going to press.

The spokesperson for the club, Mr James Dlamini, referred all enquiries to Sokhela, saying the matter was too big for him. Dynamos narrowly escaped the relegation axe last season. They finished their league programme in the third last position, with the relegated Bush Bucks FC and Free State Stars below them.
