Disastrous weekend for local PSL teams

Sport  Date: 17 September 2004

THOHOYANDOU – Last weekend was an ugly one for the Limpopo-based Castle Premiership League teams, Dynamos, Black Leopards and Silver Stars. Dynamos, who beat Highlandspark Silver Stars 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last Tuesday, donated the league points to Moroka Swallows Football Club.

They were beaten 0-1 in their tough game that was played at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Sun-day. Black Leopards were beaten 2-3 by Orlando Pirates in front of their home supporters. The match was played at the Tho-hoyandou Stadium on Saturday. The Leopards’ goals were scored by Mulondo Sikhwivhilu and the team’s captain, Duncan Lechesa. Tyren Arendse scored twice for Orlando Pirates while the third goal came from Gift Leremi after the Buccaneers were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute.

The game between Kaizer Chiefs and Silver Stars was a thriller. It was played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. Chiefs led 1-0 at half time with a goal that came from midfield maestro John “Shoes” Moshoeu in the 34th minute. Moshoeu brilliantly nodded home a cross from Arthur Zwane. They increased the tally in the 65th minute via their Zambian left footer, Collins Mbesuma. He unleashed a shot from the 25m area that rattled the net past the Stars’ keeper, Gareth Ormshaw.

Chiefs were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute after Angolan Dos Santos fouled Cyril Nzama. Moshoeu shot straight to the Stars’ keeper. The Stars’ solitary goal came in the 84th minute through Angolan Dos Santos. The Stars defender, Stanley Kgatka, was red-carded for a foul on David Mathebula four minutes before the final whistle.
