16 teams in Masungulo tournament

The annual Masungulo soccer challenge was launched during a ceremony at Mashamba last Saturday.

The tournament caters for 16 teams around Vhembe, and several matches will be played on Saturday and Sunday at Mashamba. The finals will be played on the 16th  as part of the Youth Day celebrations.

Ms Mercy Rambau, coordinator of the tournament, expressed her appreciation towards the sponsors. "Despite the difficult economic condition, we still find companies that are prepared to share their takings and support sport,“ she added.

The sponsor, Mr Jika Ngomane, said that it was important that future stars be identified at grassroots level. He appealed to the club officials and players not to involve themselves in wrongdoings such as bribery and assault on referees, saying that such actions would not only bring the tournament into disrepute, but it would also dent the image of the sponsor.

The winner of the competition will receive R12 000, a floating trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up will receive R8 000 and silver medals. The team that will finish in the third place will go home with R4 000 and bronze medals and the team in fourth position will receive R 2000.

Tomorrow’s fixtures for the Mashamba A grounds at Academy are: 09:00 - Mashamba Record Breakers vs Mulima FC, 11:00 - Wayeni Sea Robbers and Mashamba Benfica, 13:00 - Pretoria FC vs Kempton Park FC and 15:00 Lidou vs Masakona Bayern.

Saturday’s matches at Mashamba B (Post Office) grounds are: Madadzhi Eversmile vs Hlanganani FC at 09:00; Kaizer XI vs Mukondeni Shooting Stars at 11:00, Mashamba Academy vs Mpheni Home Defenders at 13:00 and Lambani Giant Killers vs Muwaweni Lucky Stars at 15:00.
