Community applauds R7 million sports centre at Masisi

A lot of progress has been recorded at the construction site of the state-of-the-art sports centre at Masisi in Ward 12 of Musina Municipality. R7 million has been put aside to finance the project.

The sports centre project was conceived after consultation with the local people, who raised a serious lack of sports facilities in their area.

The scope of work for the project includes the construction of multipurpose courts, a grassed soccer field with irrigation system, concrete palisade, guard room, changing rooms and ablution facilities and the drilling of a borehole.

A happy local soccer player, Takalani Ndou, said that, upon completion, the project would help to improve the standard of sports and healthy lifestyles in the area. He says some of the young people in the village resorted to criminal activities because they had nothing to do after school. “Young people are always lingering up and down the streets because there is nothing that keeps them busy. We also believe that the number of young people who engage in drugs, alcohol abuse and criminal activities will be lowered after the completion of the project.”

Musina Municipality’s communications manager, Mr Wilson Dzebu, says the municipality viewed recreational facilities in a very serious light. “Sport is very important - not only to children, but for adults as well. When you play sports, you meet so many people you probably wouldn't if you didn't play. Sport isn't only fun, it keeps you in shape too. You improve your agility, endurance, and overall strength.”

He urged local community members to guard against any vandalism at the new facility. “The facility belongs to all community members and it is everyone’s duty to make sure that it is safe at all times. If we handle it with care, its lifespan will be prolonged and this will also benefit the coming generation.”
