More red lights for Black Leopards

Sport  Date: 22 December 2006

Amazulu pushed Black Leopards deeper into the relegation quagmire when they beat them 0-1 in their Castle Premiership League match at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Saturday.

The Zulus were the superiors throughout the game in as far as ball possesion is concerned.

Amazulu, or Usuthu as they are affectionately called, could have scored an avalanche of goals had it not been for the fact that lady luck was not on their side that day. The closest the visitors from Thohoyandou came to scoring was when their Namibian international, Costa Khaiseb, came face to face with the Usuthu keeper, Chamara Kemoko. Instead of chipping the ball and trying other possible ways, Khaiseb, who scored the winning goal for Leopards against Supersport a fortnight ago, followed the stupid option of shooting straight to the stranded keeper. Lidoda Duvha’s keeper, Mashudu Mamphitha, made his presence felt when he stretched to the limit to save Benedict Chenene’s volley.

The striking force for Amazulu kept on knocking on the Leopards’ door, thus keeping their shaky defence running for cover for the better part of the game. Thambo Mngomeni of Amazulu threatened to score in the 38th minute, but Fernando Matola blocked his way at the goal mouth.

The score was still 0-0 at half time. The home side continued to dictate the terms in the last half. They were rewarded for their endless efforts in the 68th minute. Their overlapping midfielder, Dumisani Ngwenya, received a neat pass from Thando Mngomeni and beat Mamphitha with a volley.

Amazulu came back strongly after the goal but they could not find their way through the rock-solid defence of Leopards. Leopards are now lying in the third last position on the log with 12 points in hand, two ahead of Amazulu and Lamontville Golden Arrows.
