Though the festive traditional Musangwe boxing event is over at Gaba, it is now just a beginning for men at Makonde–Purasini who will converge every Saturday to fight for supremacy, using their bare hands. The weekly fist extravaganza takes place at Makonde Mission Young Fighters sports field, near Haluvhimbi, from 12:00 until sunset.
Musangwe coordinator Norman Mathomu said they had decided to conduct weekly tournaments after realizing that people were still thirsty for more action after the festive Musangwe tournament at Gaba. "This is our indigenous traditional sport which we must preserve. The tournament at Gaba thrilled people in such a way that they needed more action, even after it was declared closed. We then invited different stakeholders to a meeting where we agreed to start with the Saturday tournaments."
Mathomu says the Makonde Musangwe has already started attracting men from different villages around the Thulamela Municipality. "Hundreds of people gather here every Saturday and we are happy that our people are enjoying the sport. Men from as far as Thohoyandou, Mavhuwa and Muhuyu come here to enjoy the sport every Saturday. Although there are no rewards at present, people come here and fight because they love the sport dearly."
Mathomu further invites men who are interested in Musangwe to come and join them. "We are planning to make this sport a big event and we want everyone to participate. If we get sponsors in the near future, we will reward the fighters to strengthen their fighting spirits. Maybe one day, the government will make this sport legal."
One of the fighters, Rudzani Mudau (19), said he would not give up the sport because it is the one he enjoys most. "Some say it is a primitive game but I don’t agree with them because it is like other games. It is meant to promote friendship because we bear no grudges after the fight, even if one is defeated. This is the game of our forefathers and we will never stop following in their footsteps."
