Muvhuso Nedzanani impressed his fans when he defended his national flyweight title for the seventh time by beating his Eastern Cape challenger, Mfundo Gwanyana, during a tournament that was staged by Tshiawelo Boxing Promotions at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre last Friday night.
Muvhuso approached the fight aggressively, throwing killer punches from all angles. That resulted in Gwanyana’s falling down in the first round. Gwanyana indicated that he was prepared to go on with the fight after the referee, Sylvia Maphangule, had counted to eight.
The fight came to a halt for about two minutes in the second round to allow Gwanyana to recover after his claim that he was hit below the belt. Although the fight was scheduled over six rounds, the referee stopped it in the sixth round to save Gwanyana from serious injuries.
In the main supporting bout that was fought over eight rounds, Alvin Mahonisi from the Limpopo Province collected the majority of points at the expense of his Gauteng opponent, Lucas Mogane. Another local fighter who impressed the judges was Pfariso Neluvhalani. He was too strong for Sabele Nokhele from the Eastern Cape.
It was high drama when Class Mbonyana knocked Siphiwe Khumalo down in the 1st round. Zephonia Ntsokolo from Gauteng beat Lusani Nekhumbe by a TKO. The referee stopped the fight in the 2nd round as Ntsokolo was all over the hopeless Nekhumbe.
Mbulaheni Mudau showed no mercy to his opponent, Mustard Mangaladzi, when he beat him on points in their junior lightweight fight that was fought over four rounds. Phumudzo Ramagoma emerged the victor in his bantamweight fight against Morris Mutavhatsindi.
