A zealous long-distance runner and learner from Fulufhelo Special School for the Intellectually Impaired, Rofhiwa Manwadu (23), was presented with running shoes worth R600 by young, emerging Limpopo businessman, Nkhiphitheni Nedzinwani of Mac-Khippy Sportswear.

The ceremony took place at the Thohoyandou offices of Mirror on Thursday last week.

Nedzinwani said he was challenged by Rofhiwa’s athletic successes despite his intellectual status. "Rofhiwa has always been a true shining star for disabled sportsmen in our area. I felt that I would have peace of mind if I could at least do something to encourage him to put more effort into his athletic endeavors. He has participated in countless local, provincial and national competitions, coming back with medals, and his performance has put us on the map. He deserves to be encouraged because his good performances benefit everyone in society."

Nedzinwani encourages other businesspeople to contribute to the development of sports. "This donation does not necessarily mean that I have a lot of money. I am struggling to make the ends meet in this highly competitive business sector, but I have felt that I must do something for this young man. Giving back something to the community is the best gift that a businessman can offer in his lifetime. I therefore make a call on my fellow businesspeople to give back a little of what they have for the development of their communities. I will never stop doing this because community building is in my blood."

Rofhiwa’s manager, Mr. Elvis Booi, said he is hugely impressed by what Nedzinwani has done for his indigent but hardworking athlete. "We need businesspeople like Nedzinwani who have the love of the community at heart. The days for running with tattered shoes are over for my athlete and thanks a million times to Mac-Khippy Sportswear."

The jubilant Rofhiwa was so happy that he could only say: "Sure!" Rofhiwa, who stays at Maniini, near Thohoyandou, spent four weeks in Ireland in 2004 during a Special Olympics tournament. That was where he personally met Mohammed Ali, Michael Jackson and Mr Nelson Mandela.
