The Soutpansberg Model Club’s (SMC) flying field was the stage for a very exiting and entertaining radio-controlled model aircraft demonstration on Saturday, May 5.

Pilots from around the country, flying different aircraft, kept the spectators entertained, while members of the SMC made sure that enough food and drink was on offer to satisfy everyone’s needs.

A special appearance by the number one and four helicopter F3C pilots, Henke Beyers and Rudolf du Toit, proved to be very popular. Spectators couldn’t believe what can be done by these nimble helicopters. Henke also flew a scale-version Cobra attack helicopter, worth more than R30 000.

Freddie Kotzé flew his training jet on the day. The wind proved to be too unpredictable and resulted in a hard landing, lightly damaging the aircraft.

A large number of pilots contributed with flight displays with fixed-wing model aircraft to keep the spectators enthralled.

The day was ended with a private dinner for all the SMC members and invited pilots and a very spectacular night flight demonstration by Arney Sieling flying an electric helicopter with special neon lighting attached, in complete darkness.

The next day was dedicated to all the pilots attending the Fly-In, who wanted to be tested for their flying proficiency by accredited SAAMA judges. Four gold, one silver, and three bronze proficiency tests were flown.

"Congratulations to all eight pilots who received their wings," said the club. The highest score went to an 11-year-old pilot from Polokwane, Jean-Pierre Harmse.

The Radio Control hobby industry is expanding world-wide. Competitions are held all over the country and the world, and South Africans are also becoming more and more involved. Henke Beyers and Rudolf du Toit will be representing South Africa in the World F3C Helicopter Championships held in Poland during July of this year. The SMC wished both of them the best of luck with their endeavours.
