Minét Smith recently qualified to represent South Africa at the world championship of sports aerobics which is to be held at Belgrade, Serbia, in October.

Minét is a former learner of High School Louis Trichardt and matriculated in 2003. She is currently studying at the Premier Arts College, where she is a third-year student in B Arts Management, with dance as her main subject.

According to Minét, sports aerobics was an activity which she only started doing last year, but never really continued with it.

This all changed earlier this year when the team representing Premier Arts College in Sport Aerobics were plagued by injuries.

André van der Nest, coach of the sports aerobics team, asked Minét if she would be willing to fill the gap in their team of six members. This was all temporary and Minét agreed to it, later joining the rest of the team to take part in the South African fitness sports aerobics championships held at Cape Town from June 27 to 30.

Minét proudly told the Zoutpansberger that her team finished second, winning silver and qualifying for the World Championships from October 15 to 21.

According to Minét, she was thrilled and never expected to become such an important part of a team, which she was only supposed to help out temporarily. She says she is now even more determined to take this opportunity to continue with sports aerobics and use her talents to the fullest.

Qualifying for the World Championships, however, seems to be much easier than actually going on the trip to Belgrade due to the cost, which is roughly between R20 000 and R30 000. Minét asked residents and businesses to help her fulfil her dream.

Anyone willing to make a donation of any amount can phone Jana Smith at Tel 082 895 9034 or on 015 516 1526 during office hours.
