Supersport United are the 2007 champions of the Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor’s Charity Cup. They beat Black Leopards 2-1 in the final at the packed Giyani Stadium on Sunday.
Leopards soon realized that it was not their day when they squandered numerous opportunities in the opening minutes. The Leopards’ left flank, Tornado Mongale, caused an upset in the 12th minute. He went loose from what looked like an offside position and committed a suicidal blunder by shooting wide from close range instead of dishing the ball to Fisher Kondowe or Robert Ngambi, who were in the perfect scoring positions.
Fisher Kondowe suffered the pain of watching his ground cutter being cleared from the goal line after trying his luck from the far left corner. The visitors from Pretoria took the matters seriously soon thereafter. They demonstrated this by initiating some dangerous moves from the centre of the park and dishing out some telling passes to the strikers.
United were one goal up when the referee, Mr Shumani Tinyani, blew the half-time whistle. Their opening goal came in the 42nd minute through Katlego Mphela, who won a loose ball in the scramble within the box and tapped the ball in.
Leopards replaced their right back, Wanani Mulaudzi, with Jabulani Maluleke shortly before the break. Realizing that scoring chances were slim, Leopards introduced Myron Shongwe and Sbusiso Dlamini for Solly Masango and Mulondo Sikhwivhilu respectively.
Leopards did not lose hope, despite the fact that United scored their second goal in the 70th minute via Katlego Mphela. Lidoda duvha pulled one back in the 76th minute. Their diminutive midfielder, Thabiso Hlalele, scored with a ground cutter, following a rebound. Leopards missed a number of chances towards the end of the game.
