Daring cyclists of the P&L Hardware Cycling Club in Louis Trichardt undertake the challenge to cycle 2100km from Beitbridge to Cape Town, while raising funds for Reach for a Dream.
More than twenty local cyclists will start at Beitbridge on February 15. Cyclists from all over the country have indicated that they want to join for parts of the tour.
"They are more than welcome, as long as they contribute their R1 for every kilometre that they participate," says tour media coordinator Alida de Beer.
The cyclists will cover an average of 100km per day over 21 days and end with the Pick & Pay Cape Argus on March 9.
"A percentage of 70% of the money received from sponsorship will go for Reach for a Dream, for children with life-threatening diseases, and 30% towards the club for expenses on the tour. On the route there will be further events to raise more money for Reach for a Dream," says de Beer.
The idea originated when local cyclists realised that a lot of them share the dream to cycle from Beitbridge to Cape Town, and wanted to be there in time for the Cape Argus.
"Our dream will help the dreams of sick children come true," says De Beer.
According to their route plan the cyclists will cover 110km from Musina to Louis Trichardt on the 15th, 110km from Louis Trichardt to Polokwane on the 16th, 130km from Polokwane to Modimolle (Nylstroom) on the 17th and 130 km from Modimolle to Pretoria on the 18th. After four intense days they will do one shorter stretch on Tuesday (19th) from Pretoria to Krugersdorp (60km).
Then follows four challenging days in the seat - 110km to Potchefstroom (20th), 130km to Wolmaransstad (21st), 120km to Christiana (22nd) and 120km to Kimberley (23rd). Sunday (24th) is a blissful day of well needed rest.
Cyclists are back in the saddle on Monday (25th) for 120km to Hopetown, followed by 120km to Britstown (26th), 115km to Victoria West (27th) and a very long 140km to Beaufort West on the 28th. Cyclists will cover 75km to Leeu Gamka on February 29. A stretch of 120km will get them to Laingsburg on March 1. Thereafter the stretches will be shorter, though often in mountainous area. March 2, 3, and 4 will see them in Touwsrivier (80km), Worcestor (80km) and Paarl (58km). On Wednesday March 5 they will cover the last 40km to Cape Town. Three days of rest will precede their participation in the Cape Argus over 109km.
"The fundraising is proceeding well and we thank every sponsor for their generosity," says De Beer. Donations are still welcome and appreciated and can be paid into Standard Bank account number 0000330185276, Branch 002549 with Reference: Cycle Tour.
