Dynamos boot Ajax out of Coke Cup

GIYANI – Dynamos booked a place in the top 8 stage of the Coca-Cola Cup KO competition when they unexpectedly gave Ajax Cape Town Football Club a 2-0 drubbing at the packed Giyani Stadium on Saturday. The victory was sweet revenge for Dynamos, as they were knocked out of the same competition by Ajax last season.

Dynamos took the game to the Capetonians from the onset and were the superiors in the middle of the park in as far as ball possession was concerned. What could have been their opening goal was turned into a nightmare when Sandile Ndlovu dribbled past a sequence of defenders and shot wide from close range in the 9th minute.

The Ajax technical staff took too long to realize that the combination of Brett Evans and Bradley August at the forefront was harmless. Evans was replaced with Nathan Paulse later in the game.

It was Sandile Ndlovu’s goal that boosted the Dynamos players’ morale. He was on target in the 40th minute after a neat pass from Soul Mmethi. Both sides effected some changes to their original line-ups earlier in the second half. Ajax realized that it was not their day when they missed two beautiful chances in quick succession. In the first instance, Brent Carelse initiated a move with Nathan Paulse from the middle of the park, but Carelse fumbled in the finish. Shane Poggenpoel committed a similar blunder three minutes thereafter.

Dynamos introduced Thomas Ledingwane for Sibingakonke Ndlovu later in the game. Ledingwane made his presence felt when he finished off a square pass from Sandile Ndlovu, two minutes before the final whistle. The coach of Ajax, Mr Gordon Igesund, praised the players and technical staff of Dynamos at the end of the game, saying they were beaten by a better team.
