New Leopards’ coach quits

After service of just two weeks with the struggling Black Leopards, the Nigerian coach, Augustine Equavoen, resigned from the club’s hot seat on Monday this week.

Equavoen joined the Thohoyandou outfit, following the dismissal of their former head coach, Boebie Solomons, about three weeks ago. Solomons dismissal came after a string of poor results. Lidoda Duvha had lost six league matches in a row, before the management of the club took a decision to part ways with him. It did not take him long to find a new job, as Solomons was appointed the head coach for the first division side, Winnerspark, a day after his dismissal.

Equavoen was on the bench when Leopards suffered an embarrassing 0-3 defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns last Wednesday. He guided them to a 3-0 victory over Inspection FC in their Nedbank Cup match that was played at the Secunda Stadium last Saturday.

During an interview with the former Nigerian national team coach, Equavoen said that he soon realized that it would be impossible for him to save the team from relegation with the present squad. He said that the squad is not well balanced, apart from the fact that the level of the players’ fitness also leaves much to be desired.

He further stated that he did not want to waste the club’s time and money by promising that he would save the team from relegation, when it actually looks impossible under the current circumstances. He revealed that he was prepared to rejoin them in June, if by chance they manage to escape the chop at the end of the season.

The club’s brand manager, Mr Tshifhiwa Thidiela, confirmed Equavoen’s sudden resignation. He said that they will now rely on the goalkeeper coach, Joel Masutha, for their seven remaining league matches.

Leopards will play against Matatiele Professionals in their Nedbank top 16 match at the Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
