Last Sunday was the prize-giving day for the teams that were campaigning under the auspices of the Vhembe Promotional League last season.

The glittering ceremony was held at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre. The overall champions, Nesengani Junior Swallows, went home with a cheque to the value of R10 000. Apart from the cash prize, Junior Swallows were also presented with a floating trophy.

Mulodi Freedom Birds, who completed their champ of champs matches on the second spot, received R7 000 during the ceremony. The third prize of R6 000 went to Jerome River Bank, while Khumbe Poultry Farm went home with R5 500. The next two teams on the log, Lutomboni Junior Fire Boys and Thembaluvhilo Seven Stars, were presented with cash prizes of R5 000 and R4 500 respectively.

The last eight teams on the logs from each of the five six streams received consolation prizes of R1 000 each.

In his welcome address, the president of the SAFA Vhembe Regional Association, Mr Kirsten Nematandani, revealed that his association was managing to fulfill all its obligations, despite the fact that they were operating without a sponsor. The manager of sports, arts and culture in the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Ronald Makhadi, said that his municipality was committed to providing and maintaining the sports facilities in their area of jurisdiction.

A representative from the Vhembe District municipality, Cllr TS Mashau, praised the club owners for the sacrifices they make on a day-to-day basis towards the development of football in the area. He appealed to the business communities to land a helping hand in the form of sponsorship to the association. During the ceremony, it was announced that the activities for the new season will commence during the first weekend of next month.
