MUDULUNI - Provincial Commissioner Calvin Sengani officially launched the Youth Championship Against Crime at Muduluni-Ha Kutama on Saturday.
Four districts in the Limpopo Province, namely Vhembe, Mopani, Waterberg and Capricorn, sent two soccer teams each to participate in the competition.
The launch was attended by people from different structures in the community. The commissioner informed the gathering on the crime situation in the area. He stressed that child abuse is on the increase and gave examples of cases where fathers abused their children openly. He also criticised those who do not report such incidents.
Sengani further said that crime against children is unacceptable and that it destroys the future of any country. "We must protect our children because they are our future generation." The commissioner also said that the protection of women and children against crime is a police priority.
The Vhembe district spokesperson, Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, was full of praise for the youth. He said that the launch was an example to the rest of the country. He pointed out that it was the most effective way to draw the youth away from gangsterism, drugs and alcohol abuse. Mushavhanamadi further stressed that, when community members assist the police in combating crimes, it will be easy to wipe out this scourge from the community.
The U/18 ladies soccer was won by Vhembe, and Capricorn ended as runners-up. In the boys category, Mopani finished as the champion.
