Leopards still in Nedbank Cup with a chance

Sport  Date: 27 March 2009

The draw for the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal was held in the Nedbank offices in Johannesburg on Monday morning. Unlike in the last-16 stage of the competition, where Black Leopards played away from home, this time around they were lucky enough to win the home-ground advantage.

The Thohoyandou outfit, or Lidoda duvha as they are affectionately called, will meet Platinum Stars in the top-8 stage of the prestigious competition.

A quick glance at Leopards’ track record in the competition shows that they have been a force to be reck-oned with of late. They stood up against all the odds and beat the Absa Premiership side, Amazulu, 1-0 in their top-32 match that was played at the Tshifulanani Stadium early this month. Last Saturday saw them crushing another Absa Premiership team, Bay United, at the Absa Sta-dium in East London.

Although Platinum Stars’ road to the quarterfinal went via Mamelodi Sundowns, whom they beat 0-1 last Sunday, their performance was not impressive. Their winning goal came in the dying minutes of extra time after they were awarded a penalty.

The quarterfinal matches will be played over the weekend of April 11 and 12. In the other quarterfinal matches for the Ned-bank Cup, Winners Park will host Ajax Cape Town. Ajax beat the First Division side, Nathi Lions, in their last- 16 stage match.

After beating Kaizer Chiefs 4-3 last Saturday, Pretoria University will test their strength against Bloemfontein Celtic. The good news about the Pretoria side is that they will be playing in front of their home crowd. Moroka Swallows will play against Maritzburg United.
