ELIM – Last Sunday was harvest day for the clubs affiliated to the Hlanganani District Football Association last season. Their annual prize-givng ceremony was held at the Akanani Rural Development Centre at Elim.
Prize money to the value of R28 000 was distributed among the thirty clubs that maintained their membership with the association until the activities of last season came to an end. Rotterdam Van'wananti Football Club took home an amount of R3 300 and two trophies. They obtained the first position in Stream A and became the overall winners, after beating their Stream B counterparts, Valdezia Santos Football Club, in the promotional play-off match.
Valdezia Santos were awarded with a floating trophy, apart from the R2 100 cash prize which they took home. The second-placed clubs in each stream became R1 700 richer. The next four clubs on the log received cash prizes, ranging from R1 500 down to R1 000.
The last four clubs were each given a consolation prize of R400. The Top 8 KO Competition prizes were also dished out during the ceremony. The champions of the competition, Valdezia Santos, received an amount of R900 and a floating trophy.
People who have contributed towards sports development in the area during the past years were awarded with merit certificates during the ceremony. Some of the people who received honorary certificates during the ceremony include the managing director of Maindis Ladies Football Club, Mr Philemon Mdaka.
A member of the Safa Northern Province East Regional Association's executive committee, Mr Albert Malisha, acted as guest speaker during the ceremony. He praised the management of the Hlanganani District Football Association for their commitment to football development in the area.
Frank is a Human Resources Manager at the Department of Public Works in Limpopo. He is the longest serving correspondent of the Mirror, having joined us at the end of 1990. He mainly writes sports reports and resides at Tsianda Village. In 2004, Frank won the National Castle League Award, an award for the best reporter in the SAB league in South Africa.
