FC Basel were crowned the new champions of the Boabab Soccer Challenge last Saturday. They beat Begwa United 4-0 in the final, which was staged at the Samson Phophi Stadium in Vleifontein. Basel beat Vleifontein United 2-0 in their semi-final match that was played at the same venue earlier that day. The champions received R10 000, gold medals and a floating trophy during a prize-giving ceremony that was held at the stadium shortly after the final game. The head coach for FC Basel, Mr Mzwakhe Nyathi, was nominated the best coach of the tournament. He was presented with a floating trophy for his achievement. The striker of Basel, Gift Ramaxwaila, was the top goal scorer in the tournament and he also received a trophy. Ramaxwaila, who came on as a substitute in the final, scored two goals in the tournament. The central midfielder for Begwa United, Beron Msimeki, impressed the selectors, who nominated him as the best player of the tournament. Just like the top goal scorer, Gift Ramaxwaila, Msimeki was also presented with a beautiful trophy. The runners-up, Begwa United, were presented with R7 000 and silver medals, while the third-placed Vleifontein United went home with R6 000. Vleifontein United obtained the third position when their losers’ final match against The Willows was declared a walk-over in their favour after Willows abandoned their semi-final match against Begwa United. United received R4 000.
