Zamenkomste United Brothers, a team playing under the banner of the Safa Vhembe Promotional League, finished 2010 on high note, when they won the prestigious Limpopo Baobab Soccer Tournament and went home R50, 000 richer. The tournament took place at the Black Leopards training grounds in Eltivillas.
They were engaged in round robin matches with the other 31 teams in order to determine the winner. The tournament was sponsored by MTN and Black Leopards. United collected R50, 000, gold medals and a floating trophy. The runners-up, Super Eagles from Polokwane, received R20, 000 and silver medals during the league´s prize-giving ceremony.
The other 30 teams that were competing in the rich competition all received a new soccer kit and R1 000.
According to one of the officials for United, Mr Zane Mamafha, they are fully prepared for the league´s heat and he promised that his team was going to win the league at the end of the season. He stated that they had talented players in Prince Madima, Avhashoni Tshipangana, and Raymond Sinugo, who could make things happen. When asked as to how they would manage to maintain their form, he said they were going to build the morale of the boys by motivating them with incentives.
Mamafha said that they were going all out searching for a Good Samaritan who could assist them financially.
On Reconciliation Day last year, they were also crowned as the champions of the Chief Sukumani Sinthumule Soccer Challenge and went home with R5 000 cash and a floating trophy.
Mr Dudley Zikhali, MTN Football Sponsorship Manager, said that the aim of his company in funding sport was that they wanted to develop rural young people, keep the youth off the streets and prevent them from abusing alcohol. He indicated that his company was ploughing back what it gained from the community.
Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality. Kaizer was awarded the Mathatha Tsedu award in 2014.
