Home Defenders and Dolphins in thrilling draw

Sport  Date: 29 April 2011

In their Promotional League match that was played at the Vondwe open grounds on Monday afternoon, Makonde Home Defenders shared the spoils with The Dolphins, following their 1-1 draw.

The game started 45 minutes later than the scheduled 15:00 kick-off time, due to the unavailability of a match official.

Realizing that the appointed match official was nowhere to be found, the chairperson of the refereeing sub-committee, Mr Ephraim Singo, took over as the match official himself.

The home side played the first 45 minutes under pressure. The visitors from Makonde village were unlucky not to score during the first stanza. They created numerous scoring chances, but the Dolphins’ defence was rock solid. The scoreboard was still empty when the teams adjourned for half time.

The second half saw Home Defenders pressing hard in their search for goals. The Dolphins gained momentum as the game progressed. It was in the 54th minute when their centre forward, Pfano Nemutanzhela, missed a fortune. He shot wide, with the keeper well beaten.

The Dolphins were reduced to 10 men when their defender, Darlton Mabilu, saw red for intentionally handling the ball in the 64th minute. Home Defenders capitalized on the setback and scored via Thonifho Maswime three minutes afterwards.

Both sides effected one change to their starting lineup. Home Defenders also suffered a big blow when their right back, Avhavhudzani Mukundwa, was given his marching orders, following a late tackle on Shumani Radzivhoni.

Lutendo Matidza scored the equalizer with a header seven minutes before the final whistle.
