Once again the million-rand fish managed to elude anglers during the annual Jacaranda / Solly’s Discount World Catch-a-Million competition at Loskopdam on Saturday, May 7.
Drawing 390 entries, shore and boat anglers were optimistic about good catches, with good showings on fish finders. The fish, however, were reluctant to bite, despite good weather conditions.
For most, the fishing was slow. Those who had done their homework and knew where to fish were, however, reeling in good catches.
The heaviest fish of the day was landed by Gilbert Reed. He took home R10 000 with his 10kg barble. Juan-Pierre van Niekerk also took home R10 000 for weighing in the heaviest bag (8,85kg) of the day, comprising all three of the target species, namely kurper, carp and barble.
Hansie Roos´s 3,52kg carp secured him R8 000 in prize money for the biggest carp, while Hendry Language reeled in the heaviest barble (8,93kg) of the day, also winning him R8 000. Not to be outdone by the men, the R8 000 prize money for the heaviest kurper went to Poppie Mall with her catch of 2,02kg.
With nobody managing to hook the R1 million tagged carp, Henry Ekman from Lephalale walked away with the biggest prize of the day when his name was drawn as the winner of the car, sponsored by McCarthy Polokwane. His R250 entry fee landed him a Cherry QQ3 1.1 hatchback to the value of just under R100 000. Since it was Mothers Day on Sunday, he decided to give the car to his wife.
The lucky draw winner for the Jurgens Camp Lite trailer, sponsored by Camp World Polokwane, was Arno Janse van Rensburg.
For those not in the main prizes there were numerous lucky draw prizes. Gert van Zyl of Louis Trichardt also managed to win a prize, taking home a Humminbird fish finder for being the oldest angler competing in the competition at age 71.
