Mamelodi Sundowns are the new champions of the Mopani Executive Mayor’s Charity Cup. They beat Giyani Hotspurs 5-0 in the final.

Their way to the final went via Jomo Cosmos, whom they beat 4-2 at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday. Their game against Cosmos was a thriller. Sundowns’ opening goal came in the eighth minute. A defender of Cosmos, Berte Zico, deflected the ball back into his own net in an attempt to clear.

Cosmos’ striker, Taonga Dondo, caused an upset in the 18th minute. He received a neat pass from Thabiso Hlalele and hesitated for too long to unleash within the box until he lost possession. Nyasha Mshekwi scored for Sundowns in the 28th minute.

Cosmos did not sit back and relax without a fight; instead, they regrouped from behind. They reduced the deficit by one through Nontshinga Siyabonga, whose ground cutter hit the woodwork and bounced across the goal line.

Sundowns were leading 3-1 when the teams adjourned for the half-time break. Their third goal came via Musa Nyatama three minutes before the break.

Cosmos approached the second half aggressively. They forced Sundowns to chase the action and scored their second goal in the 54th minute. Katlego Loke sent the Sundowns’ keeper, Wayne Sandilands, the wrong way after a neat pass from Tsepo Moloto.

Sundowns frustrated their opponents with their dribbling skills. They scored the fourth and sealed the game in the 78th minute. Nyasha Mshekwi finished off a rebound after an attempt by Teko Modise.

  • The defending champions, Supersport United, could not believe it when they were unexpectedly booted out in the semifinal stage by Giyani Hotspurs, who beat them 6-4. Hotspurs showed their elder brothers no respect as they matched them pound for pound in all departments. The score was 1-1 after regulated time, and Hotspurs shocked the Premier League side in the penalty shoot-out.
