Leopards to meet Pirates in Telkom Cup

Sport  Date: 07 October 2011

The draw for the Telkom Knockout Competition was held at the Wanderers Sports Club in Johannesburg on Monday morning.

It remains to be seen whether Black Leopards will manage to proceed to the next round of the annual competition. They will lock horns with Orlando Pirates in their opening match. To make matters worse for Lidoda Duvha, it will be an away fixture for them.

It will be time for Leopards to exact sweet revenge for what Pirates did to them in their opening league match and the final for the Nedbank Cup at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit four months ago. Leopards lost 1-3 to The Buccaneers in the final of the Nedbank Cup and gave away league points to the same team, following their 0-2 defeat.

The captain of Leopards, Mongezi Bobe, says Pirates will be shocked to the bone if they take the Limpopo side for granted. He stated that they were aware of Pirates’ weak and strong points, saying they were going to use that knowledge to the detriment of Pirates.

Pirates’ captain, Lucky Lekgwathi, dismissed Bobe’s predictions as "a false prophecy".

The goalkeeper, defender and midfielder of the tournament will each receive a cash prize of R100 000. The top goal scorer will receive R150 000, while a player who manages to score a hat-trick in the final will go home with R10 000. The player of the tournament will become R200 000 richer.

The first-round matches of the competition will be played over the weekend of 21 to 23 October, while the final will be played on Saturday, December 10.

The rest of the first round fixtures are: Bidvest Wits vs Amazulu, Platinum Stars vs Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates vs Black Leopards, Jomo Cosmos vs Bloemfontein Celtic, Supersport United vs Golden Arrows, Moroka Swallows vs Mamelodi Sundowns, Santos vs Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town vs Free State Stars.
