Leopards and Wits in thrilling draw

Sport  Date: 07 November 2003

THOHOYANDOU – Wits University maintained their clean record in as far as losing a league match is concerned, when they played to a goalless draw with Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday evening. Leopards had themselves to blame for the unimpressive home results.

They squandered numerous clear scoring chances in the game. Mulondo Sikhwivhilu, their striker received a beautiful pass from Wonder Nhleko and shot wide from close range two minutes into the game. The Leopards marksman, Japie Motale was verbally warned for rough tackling the students' captain, Charles Johane.

At that stage the game was 12 minutes old. The home side nearly conceded a silly goal when their keeper Michael Babale misjudged the flight of the ball and suffered the pain of watching it going beyond his reach. Fernando Matola saved the situation by kicking the ball away for a corner kick.

Kevin Mushangazhike, the Leopards Zimbabwean striker and the right flank of Wits, Paul Johnson were all booked for the application of dirty tricks towards the end of the first half. Leopards used all their substitution chances earlier in the last stanza.

They introduced Justice Sithole, Naughty Mokoena and Duncan Lechesa for Nhlanhla Mathebula, Kevin Mushangazhike and Wonder Nhleko respectively. The last player to go into the referee, Simon Motau's book was Benson Mhlongo of Wits University. The closest moment Leopards came to scoring was when Mulondo Sikhwivhilu caught the Wits' keeper, Wayne Roberts off guard and caused an upset by shooting astray from the edge of the penalty box.

Wednesday's results means that Wits University have gone eight league matches without defeat, let alone conceding a goal.
