Western Stars booked a place in the next stage of the Nedbank Cup KO, following their 7-6 victory against Young Chiefs at the FNB Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.

The winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out after the 2-2 full-time draw.

No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts by both sides. The referee, Mr Patrick Tshinetise, flashed one yellow card in the first half. He reprimanded Norman Mulovhedzi of Young Chiefs in the 25th minute, following a late tackle on Rudzani Lisoga.

Young Chiefs introduced Tshifhiwa Nedzamba for Owen Demana early in the last half. The replacement was not good enough to stop Stars from scoring their opening goal. Their Rastafarian striker, Maanda Magoro, caught the Chiefs’ keeper napping and beat him with a half volley, following a scramble within the box.

Western Stars did not have enough time to celebrate their goal. Their celebrations were cut shot when a substitute, Elekanyani Netshitungulu, hit the target with a header after a corner kick that was taken by Aluwani Masala in the 58th minute.

Oscar Ramantswana of Western Stars was also cautioned with a card for an unlawful tackle on Fhatuwani Netshivhambe. Western Stars took the lead again when Daniel Mukosi finished off a square pass. Young Chiefs retaliated moments thereafter through Tshifhiwa Nedzamba.

Western Stars played the last seven minutes of the game with 10 men. Rudzani Matumba was given his marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Patrick Mashandule.

Stars converted five of their chances, while Young Chiefs scored four.
