On 11 October 2013 residents from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) took part in an international demonstration to highlight their concerns for ethnic minority rights in South Africa, particularly concerning farm attacks.
Organised by the Friends of Red October group in town, red balloons were released at 13:30 as part of the protest.
