Benny's Care Sport Academy were crowned as the champions of the SASFA Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup when they beat Mamoka High in the final on Saturday at the Malamulele Stadium. The winner had to be determined by penalty shoot-out, after the score was 0-0 when the referee blew the final whistle.
Mamoka had nobody to blame but themselves for the defeat. They dominated play for most of the first half and had ample ball possession, but squandered their opportunities. The leading goal poacher, Brian Matsena, could not live up to his reputation as he was excellently contained by Lloyd Davhana.
Sello Chipo and Mahlatsi Mabitsela of Mamoka should have scored more than twice each, had it not been for the fact that it was not their day. In the second half, the going started to become tougher for Mamoka and Benny's took command of the game. The pressure increased on Mamoka's defenders, who continuously made mistakes. The players who were giving the defence a terrible headache were Lesedi “TT” Nkatinga and Yona Mulaudzi.
Brian Mashego should have scored when the match was 69 minutes old, but his shot was saved by the keeper, Meckson Mashamaite. Both sides frustrated their fans a great deal by wasting obvious chances.
Benny's victory gave them a more than healthy financial boost, and after the match they were presented with a cheque of R100 000 as well as a floating trophy. Benny’s will now represent Limpopo at the national championship that takes place from 12 to 16 July in Gauteng. The winning school in the national competition will walk away with R1 million, while R600 000, R500 000 and R400 000 will go towards the second-, third- and fourth-placed schools respectively. Each provincial winner receives an additional R100 000. The prize money is used to fund legacy projects identified by the school.
