Dynamos booted out of Baymed Cup

News  Date: 22 September 2006

Dynamos’ dreams of lifting the Baymed Cup turned into a nightmare when they were booted out of the competition by FC AK at the Milpark Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday. FC AK scored a solitary goal to book a place in the final of the inaugural Baymed Cup.

The visitors from Giyani were dictating the terms in the middle of the park during the first 10 minutes, but their strikers fumbled at the goal finish. FC AK gained momentum as the game progressed. At that stage, Dynamos were losing shape at the far back.

The hosts capitalized on the setback to score their goal that booked them a place in the final of the competition. The goal came in the 21st minute after Siza Dlamini received a cross from the Zimbabwean international, Edzai Kasinauyo, who had collected a loose ball that was not properly cleared by the Dynamos defence.

AK settled down after the goal, creating numerous promising moves from the centre of the pitch. They were unlucky not to find the net again when Dlamini’s volley went a little wide. Dynamos approached the last half with a purpose, attacking from all angles.

Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, AK decided to defend their narrow lead with their defender, Lefa Mokgaila, doing a great job of snuffing out most of the dangerous attacks that came his way.

“We lost the game in the first half. The problem was our midfield which was not getting enough balls to the strikers,” said the Dynamos head coach, Jacob Sakala, after the game.

Dynamos will receive an amount of R150 000 for reaching the semi-final stage of the competition. The other team that lost in the semifinal is Garankuwa United who were beaten 0-3 by Free State Stars. The champions will take home a fat cheque to the value of R1 million.
