Legendary Solomon Mathase makes music with Dzomo la Venda

Tshivenda traditional-music lovers are in for a treat with a collaboration between Tshivenda traditional music legend and veteran Solomon Mathase and popular poet and guitarist Dzomo la Venda. The two were spotted on Saturday, 20 April, at a function in Thohoyandou where they showcased their talents during a live performance.

During the show, the two, both playing guitars, captivated the audience and took guests down memory lane by performing Mathase’s old songs. Those present were lucky to be the first to listen to the new sound that will feature on the upcoming album.

Mathase, who gained fame in the music industry with monster hits such as “Nwana wa Vhathu,” “Dikeledi,” and “Vho Nyabele,” among others, said the performance was a reminder to his fans that he was still active on the music scene.

“I have been absent from the music scene for almost five years now. Things have not been easy for me since my last release, ‘Ha Tshivhasa Rila Ra Fura,’ in 2019,” he said.

Mathase expressed his gratitude for the arrival of musician and poet Ndivhuwo Mabonyane, better known as Dzomo la Venda, stating that it had been like a godsend. “As an aging artist, I need fresh blood to reignite my career. Dzomo la Venda is a versatile artist who can play any type of music, and I have the feeling that we can go far together. He has pledged to assist me in realising this, and I cannot wait to be in the studio with him. My fans should rest assured that something new is coming. It is my wish that we finish the new album before the end of May,” Mathase said.

Dzomo la Venda expressed equal excitement to work with Mathase. “Who wouldn’t wish to work with an icon like Mathase? I am thrilled that we understand each other musically and that we can come up with a great project. This is a dream come true for me,” he said.
