The flames as the fire destroy the Shoprite store in Thohoyandou.

Terror fire torches Thohoyandou shop

It took fire fighters more than seven hours to extinguish a mysterious fire that torched the Thohoyandou Shoprite Store on Sunday night. Damage estimated at millions of rands was caused as the flames grew bigger and bigger, minute by minute. Local fire fighters, with backup from the Mopani Emergency Services, managed to put out the fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

Thohoyandou Police said the cause of the fire had not yet been established at the time of going to press.

“According to the security officers who were on duty, the fire started at about 17:00 on Sunday. They are also not sure about the cause of the fire. They then called for assistance until emergency staff rushed to the scene,” said Insp Nkanukeni Raedani.

“We are still waiting for the manager of the store to give us a full report while we are also busy with our investigations, although no foul play is suspected…”

Hundreds of people watched in horror as the fire fighters battled to put the flames out. They finally won their war, but the whole Shoprite block, which comprised more than 15 shops, did not have electricity on Monday.

According to a spokesperson for the group, the damage of the inferno will only be determined after a full evaluation by assessors and management.
