Customs agent in court for smuggling

A Zimbabwean customs clearing agent based in Beit Bridge, who allegedly attempted to smuggle a consignment of illegal cigarettes worth about R100 000 into South Africa through the Beitbridge border post, appeared in court on Monday.

Two Zimbabwean police officers at Beitbridge, together with two members of the Zimbabwe National Army, accused of allegedly extorting R450 from a suspected cigarette smuggler, who allegedly intended to smuggle the contraband into South Africa, had their charges withdrawn due to a lack of evidence.
