Municipal Games to take place in Musina

A large number of municipal workers from across Limpopo are expected to take part in this year’s edition of the Inter-Municipal Sports of South Africa (IMSSA) Limpopo games to be held in Musina on 9 May.

The games are part of a municipal wellness initiative which encourages teamwork, building relationships and keeping municipal workers fit and healthy. Last year’s IMSSA games were organised by Vhembe District Municipality.

This annual sporting event takes place at a provincial level, paving the way for the international tournament known as the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games which take place in September every year. This year’s edition of SAIMSA will be held in Lesotho from 18 to 26 September.

A spokesperson for Musina Municipality said that they were the proud hosts of this ninth edition of the IMMSA games, under the theme: Sustaining unity and well-being of municipal workers. Municipal teams will battle it out in different sporting codes, which include soccer, netball, volleyball, angling, golf, table tennis, pool, darts and tennis.

The chairperson of the local organising committee, Gift Mulaudzi, says the preparations for the tournament are going well. “We are on track. We have already identified venues for all the sporting codes. We want to show the community of Limpopo that Musina has the capacity to stage these important games. We extend our deepest gratitude to the IMSSA provincial executive committee and the leadership of Musina Municipality for their overwhelming support. We also make a call on all community members to come and enjoy these games.”

The deputy chairperson of the IMSSA provincial executive committee, Ms Mihloti Shirinda, was quick to express her joy and satisfaction. “I am impressed. Musina Municipality has a lot to offer. We don’t regret giving Musina Municipality the opportunity to host this important provincial sporting event. I guess other municipalities will learn a thing or two from this dedicated team of employees.”

Shirinda encouraged all municipal employees and sports lovers to like IMSSA Limpopo’sFacebook page to get more information about the tournament.

After a recent meeting with organising committees and representatives from different municipalities in Musina, the president of IMSSA, Mr Alpheus ‘Jomo’ Mashamaite, applauded the provincial and local organising committees for their sterling job in preparing for this year’s IMSSA games. “I am happy to see preparations at this advanced level. We haven’t heard of any major challenge so far. I hope other municipalities will draw inspiration from this achievement. Organising a successful tournament is the responsibility of all of us, not only the organising committees."

Mr Johnson Matshivha, the municipal manager of the Musina Local Municipality, said that there were many benefits to the hosting of the tournament.  “As thousands of people are expected to visit our town, we project positive economic spin-offs in terms of local businesses and the hospitality industry.”
