Ramaphosa greets Univen

The spring graduation at the University of Venda was an occasion mixed with sadness and happiness.

The whole university community was sad that its chancellor, businessman-cum politician, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa was making his last speech and parents and students were happy because their loved ones have achieved a milestone in their lives with the hope that their lives would change for the better.

The community found solace after Ramaphosa accepted to act as the university’s ambassador. More than 2 000 students from various disciplines saw their hard labour paying off when they graduated during the ceremony.

The ceremony took place at the university’s auditorium last week Friday

Ramaphosa has spent ten years as the chancellor of the university. Vice-chancellor and principal, Prof Peter Mbati said the university still needed Ramaphosa though he had completed his two terms. “It is hugely significant for us that Ramaphosa accepted to be our ambassador,” said Mbati

Ramaphosa has pledged to fund the research in agriculture to help rural development through agriculture.

Ramaphosa said that he has a passion to see development in the rural based universities so that they could make a difference in the lives of the people and fight poverty.

He said most of the graduates are faced with tough times as the economic meltdown has caused retrenchment in the different sectors.

Meanwhile, the process of appointing a new chancellor has already started and will be selected as soon as the council preparation is completed.

Prof Mbati said R2 bn is needed to transform the university, “Unlike other universities we did not receive an Establishment Grant and that is why we need billions to transform our institution to become one of the best rural based universities in research and human development.”

Ramaphosa joined the University of Venda in 1997 as chancellor, following his predecessor the late Walter Sisulu.
