The Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnels on the N1 north to Musina were the scene of yet another horror crash on the region’s roads on Sunday morning, July 5.

Three men and a woman were killed in a head-on collision between a Toyota Avanza and a tanker.

According to police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike, a case of culpable homicide was opened to determine the cause of the accident. At the time of going to press, it was still not clear which vehicle had caused the accident.

The four passengers in the sedan were travelling to Nzhelele when it collided head-on with a petrol tanker en route to Johannesburg. The Zimbabwean driver of the truck only sustained minor injuries.

The fatal crash caused the busy N1 road to be closed for four hours as rescue personnel worked non-stop to clear the accident scene.
