It seems as if the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association’s (SRPA) dispute with the Makhado Municipality is firmly established and the subsequent withholding of rates and taxes is off to a good start and gaining momentum.
According to figures provided by the SRPA, its membership has grown from 284 to 325 members. Of these members, 124 came to deposit money with the SRPA for 246 accounts, amounting to more than R422 000. Of this amount collected, just over R250 000 was paid over to the municipality for services rendered. The rest of the money will remain in trust until such time that it might be needed.
In the meantime, the SRPA has indicated that it is satisfied with the response by its members. However, the ideal situation would be for all its members to withhold their rates and taxes. So far, no member’s services have been suspended by the municipality, although some noises to that effect have been heard. The SRPA has requested any member whose services might be suspended to contact the association immediately and make it aware of the situation. The secretary, Colleen, can be contacted at 079 934 8711 or Herman Smith at 082 968 5012 for enquiries. Residents who want to join the association can contact either of the two for more information.
The Makhado Municipality was approached for comment on the withholding of taxes by members of the SRPA and the influence this step might have on the municipality’s finances. The official spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, on Wednesday said he was unable to provide any feedback.
