GIYANI - Tempers were rising high on Tuesday, as the Giyani Women's Rights Organisation and angry members of the community protested against bail for Adam Mashau (40) who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in mid-February.
The people marched from the Masingita Shopping Center to the Giyani Magistrate's Court and they presented a memorandum to a representative from the Department of Justice.
Some of the placards had slogans like : "Away with women abuse", "Enough is enough", "No bail for Adam!"
The chairperson of Risinga branch of the Giyani Women's Rights Organisation, Ms Felicia Nyandani, presented the memorandum.
Some of their demands are that Mashau be given the harshest sentence, "to equal the misery he had brought to the deceased's family and friends" and that he must not be granted bail.
Mashau appeared briefly in court and he pleaded not guilty. The case has been postponed to May 6, pending a ruling from the High Court on whether the case should be heard in the High Court or the regional court. Mashau remains in custody.
* In a separate incident, a man who is known to the press, last Sunday allegedly attacked Tryphinah Bvuma of Giyani Section F and her friends. They were on their way home from picking marula fruit next to the man's farm. The man, who is from Xikukwani Village, claimed that the people were walking on his land and he allegedly started hitting them.
They then went to the Giyani Satellite Police Station. On their arrival the man was busy reporting them to the police who promised to open cases on both incidents. The following day when Tryphinah went to the police, she was told that they had no knowledge of such a case at the police station. She is worried that the man is still at large and he might attack other women who are passing by his property.
