Youth urged to desist from using drugs and alcohol

The acting district mayor of the Mopani District, Cllr Helen Moshobane, called on the youth to stop indulging in unhealthy lifestyles such as using drugs and alcohol at a young age if they want to reach old age.

Moshobane was speaking during the district’s awards ceremony to honour those who had reached hundred years of age, which was recently held at the Mopani Country Lodge.

The function was attended by several people above hundred years of age from around the five municipalities in the Mopani district. Unfortunately, everyone was not healthy enough to attend the event and some had sent representatives to receive their awards.

In an interview after the event, Mr Thomas Mogale, who is 101 years old and is still strong, echoed the statement by the acting district mayor that the key to a long life is a healthy lifestyle. “Unlike in our days, today’s youth is more vulnerable to an unhealthy lifestyle, because of how technology has made things easily available,” explained Mogale.

“During our time, we would herd cattle, walk long distances, and eat healthy foods. There were no drugs,” he said.

“Alcohol was meant for men and not for boys, but today even a10-year-old child has knowledge of alcohol."

The oldest person in the area, Mr Jack Mokwevho, is 108 years old. He was represented by his son.

MR Shadrack Mogoboya, who spoke on behalf of the elderly people, said they were very grateful for the gifts. “We never heard of anyone getting awards for being old,” he said.
