Unknown body found floating in the Damani Dam

The rural community of Damani village received a shock last weekend, following the discovery of an unknown man floating in the Damani Dam.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said that the man was suspected to be in his early fifties and was found floating in a dam early on Sunday morning. “The community members informed us about the shocking discovery and our divers arrived at the scene, where they removed the body,” says Malelo.

“There seems to be nothing unusual as the body was still intact. There is also no visible injury and the deceased was fully dressed. We are still going to conduct a post mortem,” he says.

“We are humbly appealing to the community members to help us establish the identity of this man. As of now, we have just opened an inquest docket as we do not know what caused his death.”

The Damani Dam is one of the major sources of water to the communities of Damani, Khubvi, Makonde and other villages. Recently, more than R60 million was used by the Vhembe District Municipality to upgrade the dam in order to address water shortages in the area.
