Sinyegwe passes on skills to youth

Former school principal and traditional-music singer Ms Esther Sinyegwe released her sixth album, titled “Vho Nkongona”, last month. Sinyegwe describes the album as one of her best musical offerings to date, featuring 10 new songs.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror on Monday, Sinyegwe said that she had spent at least a year working on the album. “I had to collaborate with some of the youngsters whom I am training in cultural music and traditional values to ensure that they truly understand what they are learning in my cultural classes,” she explained.

The title track of the album, “Vho Nkongona”, addresses the issue of people who feign affection while consistently leading others astray in life. “People should learn to take initiative and cease relying on others in life. There are many instances in our culture where we are advised not to place our trust in anyone but ourselves,” she said.

When questioned about the interest of young people in learning their cultural values, Sinyegwe said that those aged between 8 and 15 attended classes regularly, whereas those between 15 and 35 seldom did so. “Attendance is challenging for adults, but I am primarily focused on training them from a young age, so I am content with those who attend regularly,” she remarked.

Having released the album late last month, Sinyegwe has only managed to send it to one radio station and plans to distribute it to other stations and recording studios this week.
