Use water sparingly

Limpopo´s acting premier, Soviet Lekganyane, has urged communities to use water sparingly and to treat it as a scarce resource.

Lekganyane, also the MEC for Local Government and Housing, was speaking at the Dumasi Sports Grounds last Tuesday, during the launch of National Water Week.

Addressing the hundreds of villagers who attended the event, Lekganyane urged communities to use water sparingly as it has become a very scarce resource in many parts of the province. He said South Africa was a water-stressed country and was in the league of the 30 driest countries in the world.

He urged all to start influencing better use of water, saying it could make a significant contribution towards making water available for further development. “We need the private sector to join government in delivering water services and in supporting water resources management. The provision of access to high-quality water to rural communities is about improving their lives beyond survival,” he said.

Vhembe Executive Mayor Cllr Falaza Mdaka urged all to lead in the campaign to save water in the communities. He thanked the Department of Water Affairs for building the Nandoni Dam, which he said would go a long way in responding to the water needs in the district.

Meanwhile, people from areas around Nandoni still have to taste a drop from the dam after a contractor installed substandard pipes which burst when in use. The department has gone the litigation way, but said the people could not be held to ransom and that they would be seeking other means to make sure that communities have water to drink.
