New arts and craft centre for Mutale

MUTALE – Thousands of people gathered at the Tshandama Arts and Crafts Centre last Tuesday for its official opening.

Amongst the dignitaries who attended the event were the MEC of Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Rosina Semenya, the MEC of Finance and Economic Affairs, Mr Thabo Mufamadi, the Mayor of Mutale Mr LM Manyuwa, the Municipal Manager of Mutale, Mr Godfrey Netshanzhe, IEC Representative, Mr Zwoitwaho Nevhutalu, councillors and traditional leaders.

People were entertained by traditional dances like Tshigombela, Malende and Tshikona.

According to Ms Semenya, the centre will generate the much-needed employment and other opportunities for the local residents who are savaged by the scourge of hunger, poverty and underdevelopment.

The Tshandama Arts and Crafts Centre started on September 13, last year. The Centre involves stalls for sculpture, paintings, basket weaving, pottery, canework, textile crafts and related artefacts.

Semenya added that the centre will create permanent employment opportunities for approximately sixty people, "which would multiply as the project expands to higher horizons''. The plans for the growth of this project will include the creation of accommodation facilities, a caravan park and a picnic area. Hopefully this will attract more visitors to the area thereby boosting the tourism business, said the MEC.
