Orphans receive toys from First Lady

THOHOYANDOU - Orphans in the Thohoyandou Children’s Home will now be able to learn through play as the province’s first lady, Mrs Ramokone Moloto, handed out enough toys to the institution last Thursday.

The toys were collected from businesspeople by the First Lady Trust Fund, with the aim of equipping children both educationally and recreationally. Mrs Moloto said the ongoing transformation of the education system should have key areas of focus, life skills and children empowerment.

She further said that the curriculum content from pre-school level right up to tertiary education should be restructured in a manner that is able to produce quality products that can boost the economy of the country.

“Centres like the Thohoyandou Children’s Home must develop and produce people who are able to respond to socio-economic and political needs,” she said. She further said children should be taught about their rights, norms and values in order to know what is happening in the country. “They must know that they have the rights to parental care, shelter, protection, basic health care, education and all other rights enshrined in the constitution,” she said.

She thanked the sponsors, Eskom, Absa, Old Mutual, and businesspeople such as Mr Amie Chaya for their generous contribu-tions by donating toys to the First Lady Trust Fund. The former first lady, Mrs Ouma Ramatlhodi, established the Trust Fund and it has no money. We are still depending on donors,” said Mrs Moloto.

Mr Tom Boya said this is the time for Private, Public Partnership (PPP) where people should join hands with the government to help wherever there is a need.

Mr Stan Chauke of Old Mutual said there was no way the orphans would be neglected and his company was going to adopt the Thohoyandou children’s home very soon.

The Thohoyandou Children’s home’s manager, Mr Richard Ligege, was over the moon. He said the centre has 59 children and, without help from businesspeople, the centre cannot meet all the needs of children.
