Axed mayor elected SACP chairperson

The former mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Ms Mavhungu Luruli, made a huge political comeback when she was re-elected chairperson of the  South African Communist Party in the strong Alpheus Malivha region.

The election took place during the party's 16th district congress at the Thohoyandou Arts and Culture Centre last Sunday. The theme of the congress was Rooting the communists in grassroots organs of people’s lives– forward with socialism.

The congress has called, in one of its resolutions, on Premier Cassel Mathale to step down. The resolution regarding Mathale reads: "We reaffirm the call for Cassel Mathale to step down as premier with his reactionary forces from government without negotiating with anyone, as they have virtually collapsed the Limpopo government and that action should be taken based on [the] Auditor General’s 2010-11 Report finding."

Luruli and her executive were elected unopposed. Her deputy is Mr Andrew Kotane, while Mr Skinjo Ramugondo is the treasurer, assisted by Shuffle Marubini. Mr  Norman Mkhabele is the new secretary.

Ramugumo said delegates reaffirmed their confidence in Luruli, because she is a committed and disciplined leader. Luruli said she was humbled by the confidence in her. “I am a leader because of the people, and they are the ones who can say why they support me,” she said.

She recently resigned as Makhado Mayor, following the decision of the provincial executive council of the ANC to axe her. She is now an ordinary councillor under the new mayor, David Mutavhatsindi.
