Police make another arrest in dagga case

WATERVAL – Far North Police believe they have made a difference in limiting the supply of dagga in the area, following the arrest of a 40-year-old man who claimed to be responsible for the sixteen 80kg bags of dagga in the Waterval area.

Philemon Dovhani (39) of Bungeni handed himself to the Waterval police after the arrest of his late sister Tshikisa Chauke (56) on March 31.

Police arrested Chauke after they searched and found sixteen 80kg bags of dagga, after receiving a tip-off from community members.

Makhubele then handed himself to the police and declared that the dagga belonged to him, while asking police to release his sister who had poor health. Tshikisa died later after her release. Her death, according to the police, had nothing to do with her arrest.

Makhubele appeared in court on May 7 and his case was postponed to June 2. He was released on R5 000 bail.

Police believe the seizing of this dagga, which is believed to be coming from Kwazulu Natal, has helped in reducing the supply of dagga in the area. Another man, Jazi Zwane from Kwazulu Natal, was sentenced to four-years imprisonment by the Waterval court after he was arrested while in possession of two 80kg bags of dagga at one of the roadblocks during Easter time.
