Policeman arrested for shooting relative

 
The Waterval police arrested a 31-year-old police constable who allegedly shot and killed his 33-year-old relative at Nwaxinyamani village outside Waterval last Tuesday. The man briefly appeared before the Waterval Magistrate´s court last Tuesday, facing a charge of murder. Constable Famandla Voster Mabunda (31) of Nwaxinyamani village allegedly shot and killed his close relative, Mr Joan Mabunda, at the village on Sunday April 18. According to the police report, Mabunda, a police constable attached to the Hlanganani SAPS, was drinking at a nearby tavern in the village when he started to disagree with Mr Mabunda. The two started quarrelling at the tavern, but apparently in order to avoid fighting, Mabunda then decided to go home. "When Mabunda was at home, the deceased (Joan) arrived with a broken bottle of beer, wanting to stab him. The suspect then opened fire and shot the deceased with his service pistol. The deceased died on the scene," said the acting spokesperson for the Waterval police, Warrant Officer Abel Masonto. He confirmed the incident to have happened at about 16:10. According to Masonto, the suspect was arrested the same day on the scene and his service pistol was taken from him. "The police are investigating a case of murder. The case was postponed for further police investigation, while the suspect remains in custody," said Masonto.
