An hour was all it took for a blazing hot fire to reduce a wholesale business to rubble. The raging fire that destroyed the CheckOut store in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Sunday, broke out at around 12:00, causing mayhem not only for local firefighters, but also for business owners.

Pemba, the rhino orphan

Who can forget the heart wrenching video footage of the little rhino calf that was weeping at the lifeless carcass of his mother. The calf, named Pemba, was moved to the Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo. The Zoutpansberger newspaper had the opportunity to visit Pemba and spent a lazy afternoon in his delightful company.

Humanitarian crisis is brewing at dumping site

On Wednesday, 9 October 2013, the situation at the Makhado Municipality's dumping site took a turn for the worst. The road to the dumping site was completely blocked by rubbish, leading to people dumping their refuse by the side of the main road. According to homeless people living on the dumping site, the TLBs and machinery have been broken for months, crippling effective disposal services. This follows years of continued neglect at the site. The stench and thousands of flies are causing great concern for possible health issues that may arise.

Red October protest 2013

On 11 October 2013 residents from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) took part in an international demonstration to highlight their concerns for ethnic minority rights in South Africa, particularly concerning farm attacks. Organised by the Friends of Red October group in town, red balloons were released at 13:30 as part of the protest.

An intoxicated would-be thief broke into a liquor store in the early hours of Sunday morning. After a short rampage around the store, the man fell asleep and was discovered later by the store's employees.

Die Zoutpansberg Privaat Hospitaal het 'n reuse liefdadigheidsprojek aangepak vir Mandela Dag op 18 Julie 2013. Hulle het 11 pasiënte geidentifiseer wat dringend oogoperasies nodig gehad het, maar self nie die onkoste daarvan kon bekostig nie. Met behulp van donasies en die onbaatsugtige opoffering van spesialiste, kon sommige pasiënte vir die eerste keer in 20 jaar weer sien.

Tragic end to search

A community's search for two missing boys, which started by the combing of nearby bushes and progressed to a house-to-house search, ended in tears when the boys were found dead. The two boys, Nhleketo Mashimbyi and Rifuwo Hlungwani, both aged 3 were found in an unused pit toilet, dug in one of the yards, not far from their homes.

New soccer league for elderly at Mutoti?

If the determination to participate in sport, more especially soccer, displayed by the elderly in Vhembe is anything to go by, a new elderly soccer league could be in the offing in the area. This became evident when hundreds of the elderly, some with their walking sticks, filled the Mutoti sports ground to watch 13 teams from different parts of the district play each other for no prizes at all, but for the love of the sport.

Hardworking Univen legal advisor buried

Dr Nanga Lidovho, a legal advisor for the University of Venda who died in a motorcycle accident, was buried in the Shayandima cemetery. More than 40 motor bikers from all over Limpopo and Mpumalanga also came to pay their last respects to their fallen friend and led the procession from his home to the local Lutheran Church.


SAAF's Air Capability Demonstration 01/2013

The South African Air Force (SAAF) recently held their first air capability demonstration at the Roodewal bombing range. Despite severe budgetary restraints, the Hawk fighter jets and Rooivalk helicopters impressed with their firepower. The utilization of the Oryx helicopter on the battlefield was also demonstrated.

Nare's colleagues demand justice

Traffic was brought to a halt last Friday as hundreds of protesters, dressed in bright red and green, marched from the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) train station to the magistrate's court to demand justice for the murdered Nara Mashamaite (47). The marchers, who consisted of Transnet officials and members of the local community demanded justice for their colleague as her case is still ongoing eleven months after her murder.

Indian businessman robbed by men in police uniforms

Businessman, Saifi Mukhtar of Thohoyandou's business was robbed by three men masquarading as policemen on Friday, January 27, 2012. The robbers demanded money before taking airtime vouchers, cigarettes and cell phones. They drove off in a combi with the same colours as that of the police. The video footage shows the robbers entering the shop and subsequently pulling guns on the staff members and owner. They calmly collect what they want before leaving.
